I know this is a TV Blog but I just had to comment on what Britney Spears has been doing these past few days. I think shock is not the word I thought of when I along with everyone else first learned of her "shaving " expedition.
The funny thing is why were we shocked? Why did we all just stare at the pictures? This woman has been spiraling out of control for months and days since the end of her marriage, and surely even before.
I think we were shocked because somehow in the collective community we keep hoping that whatever bad things Britney does will be temporary, something she can explain away in her next television interview or laugh about in a month or so. We constantly give her the benefit of the doubt. But after we stared at the picture and read the story, what did we do? We just bowed our heads in disappointment. No, we couldn't rely on excuses of exaggerated tabloid stories or rumors anymore. It was in front of our faces. Of course, with our last breath of hope we considered, would she turn around?
Well now we know the answer to that. Of course, the conventional wisdom has been, "she needs to hit rock bottom before she turns around." But what if she doesn't or moreover, what if she doesn't know how? Clearly she has seen numerous celebrities parade in and out of "rehab" and understands that it really is a way for celebrities to get out of the public eye while things blow over. (Kate Moss?). There has got to be another way.
Britney is constantly bemoaning in self-pity, "nobody loves me, nobody cares anymore!" My response to her is, "It is YOU that doesn't care about you anymore. It is YOU that doesn't love you anymore."
How do we get this woman to learn to build her confidence in her decision making. How do we teach her to how to make the right decisions? How do we get her to see that there is another option to life than drugs and fake rehab? How do we do it? That is my question. Is the answer throwing cold water on her and taking away her kids? Will that help? What do you think?
